Write at least 250 words. Touting to another country or region is quite easy nowadays. Visitors always bring economic profit, but they also cause problem about different cultures and behavior. Who should retreat in this situation is discussed and supported by different opinions. Some people say that the visitor should follow the local customs and behavior. They suggest that the visitors should show respect to local people, or they may offend them in some way they never cared. For example, if someone travels to Arab countries and keep talking about pig, he would annoy the local people for insulting their religions. Besides that, travelers who want to experience the local way of life, or enjoying the local culture, should follow the local customs and behavior. If someone wants to see the Chinese monks’ daily, he should better dress like a monk and eat and sleep with them. If he only carry a camera and take photo everywhere, he won’t get so much experience. Some other people believe that the host country should welcome culture differences. They consider that the tourist would bring all kinds of customs and behavior all over the world. That would be a chance for local people to experience different kind of life. Also an open-minded country is more attractive to tourist than those countries which are hostile to them. At last, it is virtue to forgive someone who is not aware of some restrictions like customs or behavior. I think, as a visitor we should get familiar with the local custom and try to respect their way of life. We should not expect all other people change their ideas like ours. But as a local citizen, we should forgive the visitors when they offend us without awareness. (286 words) 看图说话2
The two graphs below describe the life cycle of the silkworm and the production of silk cloth. In the first graph, the whole life of a silkworm, from eggs to grown moth, is described as a cycle. At the very beginning, the eggs are left on a leaf. 10days later, they grow up to silkworm larva, which looks thin and long. They live on the mulberry leaf for the next 4-6weeks and then start to produce silk thread to make cocoons in 3-8days. After 16 days changing in cocoon, they grow up to moth, and then they can lay eggs. The cocoon is the raw material for silk production. After boiling in water, the cocoon is unwound in to thread, about 300-900m in length. Several silk threads are then twisted into one strong thread which is used to weave silk cloth. Both the threads and silk clothes can be dyed into different colors if needed.
December 10 Idioms learned in English class1. stick your neck out – to take a risk 2. beat a dead horse – to waste time doing something that is already attempted or closed 3. cool as a cucumber - calm 4. eat your words 5. get the lead out of your feed – hurry up 6. kick the bucket – don’t work, die 7. climbing the walls – can’t endure anymore, need relief 8. butterflies in your stomach - nervous 9. cat got your tongue – can’t speak 10. call it a day – to stop work, to bring an end 11. a dime a dozen – easy to get, available anywhere 12. feast or famine – great success or total failure 13. fish out of water – don’t fit in, feels out of place 14. head honcho – person in charge 15. like a bump on a log – inactive or not responding 16. like two peas in a pod – identical, alike in looks and behavior 17. keep a straight face – keep from laughing 18. jump down my throat – to talk to someone in angry 19. in the limelight – at the center of attention 20. in the same boat – sharing same problem, in same bad situation 21. cost an arm and a leg – very expensive 22. full of it – being foolish 23. get away with murder – to do something illegally or badly 24. every Tom, Dick and Harry – every person possible 25. get a kick out of – to enjoy something 26. really a kick – really funny 27. gone to pot –become ruined, to get worse and worse 28. sight for sore eyes – a most welcomed sight, a pleasant surprise 29. off the top of my head – say something immediately without thinking 30. your two cents – give your feedback or opinion 31. don’t have money to burn – cant spend money freely 32. time is money – time is money 33. run for your money – give a competitor a equal challenge 34. shape up or ship out – improve or get fired 35. know the ropes – know how to handle 36. rock the boat – to make trouble or spoil a plan 37. smooth sailing – everything is going as planned 38. no spring chicken – not younger anymore 39. monkey business – naughty behavior, dishonest behavior 40. get under your skin – bother or annoy someone 41. sick as a dog – very sick 42. go over like a lead balloon – an idea that fails 43. handle with kid gloves – to treat gently and carefully 44. hanging by a thread – be in a dangerous or unsafe situation 45. hit the books and pound the books – to study hard 46. in the bag – certain of success 47. not a ghost of a chance – not likely to succeed 48. give up the ghost – to stop trying to do something 49. a witch-hunt – an attempt to punish people who have opinions that are believed to be dangerous 50. to be as blind as a bat – to be completely blind 51. right off the bat – immediately 52. to not bat an eye – to not show any reaction 53. like a bat out of hell – very fast 54. a night owl – someone who goes to bed late 55. a free spirit – someone who does what they want 56. every trick in the book – every way possible 57. teach an old dog new tricks – difficult to get someone to change long-time habits and way of doing things Thanks to Prof. Larson, a good teacher. The table indicates the date opened, kilometers of route and passengers per year of the six cites. The railway system of London is described as the oldest one and the longest one. It was opened in 1863 and has a total route of 394kilometres by now. But the London railway system isn’t the heaviest one, it transport 775millions of passengers every year, smaller than that of both Paris and Tokyo. These two cities have opened their railway system in early 20th centuries. They also have very long route, 199 and 155 in kilometers respectively. The Tokyo railway system transports most people every year (1927millions), over 700 millions more than that of Paris. The other cities have opened their railway system in recent decades. The Washington DC has built a 126kilometres railway system and transports 144millions of people every year. Kyoto started its railway in 1981, but it only constructed 11kilometres and carries only 45millions passengers every year which rank the last places in both categories. The newest railway system is opened in Los Angeles in 2001 with a route of 28kilometres. They transport 50millions passengers every year. Others believe that children who are taught to co-operate rather than compete become more useful adults.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
When talking about building the personality of a child, someone said that a sense of competition should be encouraged, but others believes that co-operate is more useful. The both views are dedicated to build a useful adult. A competitive child is described as a young man who is trying to do better than anyone else in all fields of life, like study or sports. They would think about and solve problems by themselves. Such kind of child is usually ambitious or aggressive. Although they are supposed to success in the future, they may work alone. A good guidance is needed to bring up a leader man. But if too much stress is imposed, the child would lose confidence or even cheating in some competition. If a child is taught to co-operate rather than compete, he should work or solve problems in a team. During such a process, he would learn how to accept different ideas and devote for the team and other members. It is supposed that he would find his position easily as well as he steps into society because he is a good team member to count on. Some people would worry that these children would feel hard to make a decision by themselves or face their own trouble. I think, a child should be taught to think independently and co-operate with others if possible. In this way he would be able to assess his condition and figure out how to face a problem by himself. Also, the teamwork training is useful for build a sense of co-operation with which way he can make great achievement that couldn't be accomplished by oneself. At last he would grow up to be a useful man. It is said that in some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school and starting university studies. I think this is of great benefit. As we always considered, travelling is helpful for enhancing one’s life experience. During the travel, we can experience many different living conditions like poor, rich, lonely or happy. Also, the students would feel the way of life of different kinds of job, which would be valuable for them to choose study fields. Another benefit is the beautiful sights would encourage the young students to make great effort to earn more money for a future tour. Working is also very important for a high school student. They would know how difficult it is to earn money and feed once self. If a student is going to pay for the education fee himself, a working background would be helpful to find a part-time job during the university study. The working experience is also useful to estimate the outlook of different study fields. Working can also enhance a lot of personal abilities, like solving problems, communicating strangers and cooperating in teams. These personalities are valuable for their development. The one year travelling or working also have some disadvantages. If someone has enjoyed too much in sighting or making money, he would lose interests in learning. He would be thinking of colorful world while sitting in classroom. Also, for those who cannot gain any benefits, it is a waste of time. Anyway, the one year travelling or working experience is of great advantages for those students before going to universities. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.
I would only agree that this kind of rules only paid enough attention to the right of female students, but it would be the last choice I would adapt if I am in charge. It is right to give women enough opportunity to get education and in all aspect of social life, but it doesn’t mean the number of students must be equal between male and female students. The equal number doesn’t mean equal rights. The number of both male and female students applied for the university may not equal. If they give same number of chances, it would be unfair to the group of a larger population, because they get a lower chance to enroll in, and their right is affected. Not all the subjects have the same attracting effect to both male and female students. Those engineering subjects are more suitable for strong and tall boys as we assumed, and nursing is occupied by women. If they enrolled same number of girls and boys in engineering subjects, the girls would be difficult to find a job after they graduate, and a male nurse may be the funniest thing in a hospital. It is important to give female student same right in applying of a university, but it really doesn’t make sense to restrict the number of student according to gender. (222 words) |
